Biography

The parentage of Thomas, Samuel, and Joseph Pavord (aka Pavitt, as recorded for Joseph in the 1851 England and Wales Census) is not shown in known records; it is however most probable that their father was born in or near the parish of Barwick, in County Somerset, about 1740-1745, given his sons' births in the first years of the 1770s. Two couples have previously been put forward as potential parents of the three sons (see Research Notes below), but the geographically most logical candidates -- John and Martha (Langdon) Pavard/Pavord of Barwick -- are now presumed, for purposes of this profile, to be the correct pair.

Research Notes

The surname "Pavitt" -- under which this profile was originally created -- is attached to son Joseph; however, it appears in only one record located to date, the census of 1851. In the absence of a birth or baptismal record -- neither of which has yet been found -- his name is probably more properly "Pavord", the surname shown in the record of both Joseph's first marriage, and his burial. There are more than half a dozen variants of the name shown in local records: the two above, plus Pavard, Paverd, Parford, Pavet, and Pavit -- and likely others yet to be catalogued.

One descendant's research suggests Joseph's parents are John and Elizabeth Pavord/Parford of West Stafford, Dorset; however, more logical candidates are John and Martha (Langdon) Pavard/ Pavord of Barwick, married there in 1763[1]: a 1763 marriage fits very reasonably with early-1770s births for Joseph and his brothers, and the location is a match to Joseph's birth location of Stoford (a hamlet within Barwick parish) -- as given in both the 1841 and 1851 census records. Further oblique support is offered by the later interconnection of the Pavord and Langdon families in Joseph's second marriage, which is to Mary Langdon.[2]

Parents of the above John Pavord of West Stafford, born in 1734 (who married wife Elizabeth in 1763), are presumed to be John and Mary (White) Paviot/Paverd.[3][4]
