Clara was Ho-Chunk.

In 1894, Clara was still living with her parents Alex Payer and Sarah (Rasdall) Payer on the Winnebago Reservation in Nebraska. The census of that year shows that she was born in 1879. (1940 census)

She dropped out of school after the 5th grade. (1940 census)

Marriages and Liaisons

She was married to William Henry Sunn. (1940 census) However, the 1918 census shows that before this more stable relationship, she had taken up with an Oto named "Doyle" around 1905, and they had had a daughter named "Rachael." A year prior to that she had had an affair with Abraham Priest, a Hochunk. The offspring of that union, William Payer, became the step-son of William Sunn.

In 1894, when she was 15, she resided in Winnebago, Thurston County, Nebraska. (1894 census)

In 1931, she and her family were living in Winnebago, Nebraska. (1931 census)

From at least 1940, her residence was at 222 So. Wall St., Sioux City, Iowa. (1940 census)

Her tombstone shows her death to have occurred in 1963. She is buried at the Winnebago Cemetery, Winnebago, Thurston County, Nebraska, USA . (Find a Grave)
