Biography

John W. Payne was born on 21 Sep 1814 in Waverly, Union, Kentucky, United States, son of John Payne (~1776 - <1858) and Mary Catherine (Smith) Payne (~1789 - ). His parents had migrated from Maryland.

John (~23) married Jane Catherine Spalding (~16) (born in Union County, Kentucky on 28 Jul 1821; died in Union County on 15 Nov 1886), daughter of William Francis Spalding and Betheland Eliza Wathen, on 7 Jan 1837 in Union County, KY.[1]

John lived his entire life in Union County, Kentucky appearing in the 1840 through 1880 census. After his marriage, he and his wife appeared together in the census. Union County is on the Kentucky border. The Ohio River divides the county from Illinois-Indiana.

In 1850 census, John listed $5500 worth of real estate. With this large of a farm, he required help. Unfortunately, he enslaved eleven people to assist with the farm duties.[2]

By 1860, John was 45 years old and his wife was 34. His real estate holdings tripled to $15,000 and personal wealth was estimated at $7,000. Part of his wealth would be attributed to those who he enslaved, which was reduced in 1860.[3]

After the Civil War ended, John's real estate holding slipped to less than $10k with the personal wealth also diminished to $1,125. His sons John and William assisted with the farm. He had two farm hands living on the premises to assist: Andrew Shoemaker (13) and John Thompson (28) whose race was listed as black. It is likely he was formerly enslaved by the family.[4]

In the 1880 census, the 65-year-old John remains a farmer with his two sons helping him. Two of his grandchildren live with him. Also, a young black couple identified as John and Sara Payne with a 9-year-old daughter, Mollie.

John died on 30 Aug 1881 in Waverly aged 66. John Payne was mentioned on a memorial in Sacred Heart Cemetery, Saint Vincent, Union County, Kentucky with a death date of 30 Aug 1881.[5]

His wife died five years later and is buried beside him.
