Again with reference to the spelling of the surname, there is a family tale that when my Great Uncle William (Bill) Payne (1881-1898) went to apply for his pension at the Post Office they could not find any record of him. He suggested that they look under the name Peain and they found it.

The surname Peain is often spelt differently depending when and what record you look at.
Peain was used before mid 1800's in Cornwall and Devon. Afterwards, depending on who was taking down the record, it could be Peain, Pain, Paine or Payne. I believe it may have originally been Pean, again from Cornwall/Devon.
