Biography

Born George was born in 1824 and baptised on 20 August 1824 in Market Harborough ^[1]. He was the son of Thomas Payne and Elizabeth (Carter) Payne.

In 1841 ^[2] George (15) was living with his parents and siblings Martha (20), John (15), Sarah (13), Mary (11), Charles (9) and Harriett (5) in Bowden Magna, Leics. No profession was listed.
In 1851 ^[3] George (25) "shoeing smith" was living in South Lane Grantham together with his younger sister Mary (20) and James Lee (16) "apprentice".

Marriage In July 1851 ^[4] George married Mary Dorman b1821 probably in her home town of Castle Bytham Lincolnshire.
In 1861 ^[5] George (37) "Master shoeing smith" and Mary (41) were living in Selby Road Grantham together with Emma Newton (16) "general servant".
In 1871 ^[6] George (47) "shoeing smith & farrier" and Mary (50) were living at 3 Avenue Road Grantham. Also registered at that address were his sister-in-law Elizabeth Payne "blacksmith's widow", nephew Charles Arthur Payne (15) "shoeing smith" and niece Susanna Sulley Payne (2) as well as Elizabeth Smith (18) "general servant".
In 1881 ^[7] George (57) and Mary (61) were living at 3 Avenue Road Grantham together with Lizzie Willson (19) "general servant".
In 1884 Mary died age 63 ^[8].

Marriage On 8 June 1886 George married the 52 year old spinster Ann Brown in Burbage Derbyshire ^{[9] [10]}.
In 1891 ^[11] George (67) "shoeing smith" and Ann (57) were living at 3 Avenue Road Grantham together with Anne McDonald (18) "general servant".
In 1901 ^[12] George (77) "living on his own means" and Ann (67) were living at 6 Castlegate Grantham together with Lillian Rawlinson (17) "general servant/domestic"

Died George died ^[13] age 78 on 8 March1902 and was buried in Grantham Cemetery ^[14]. Probate was granted on 9 May 1902 to Ann Payne widow and Thomas Freeling Payne ^[15] shoeing-smith: effects £912 10s 10d ^[16].
There were no known children from either marriage.
