Biography

Elen (also seen as Ellin) was the wife of Rowland Calkins and the mother of three children - including Hugh, the immigrant to the New World. She was probably born in Rotherfield, England. Some sources state her father's name was John, but this has not been proved.

Birth

Elen was baptized on September 28, 1572 at Rotherfield, England.^[1] but see research notes ^[2]

Marriage

Her marriage to Rowland Calkins is recorded in the Waverton, Cheshire parish records, and took place at Chester St. Oswald in 1597.^[3]

Children

Elen had her first child William in early January 1600/1, and her second child Hugh in 1603. In August of 1605, she gave birth to Peter, but from the record it would appear he did not survive.^[4]

Death

Elen's burial is recorded on August 23, 1605 in Waverton,^[5] five days after Peter's christening. It would appear she passed away from complications of childbirth. Her widower Rowland did not re-marry until nearly 20 years later.

The record of baptism indicates that Elen's father was John Payne.
