Biography

Travers, sometimes shown as Travis, was born about 1794 in Fairfax County, Virginia, the son of Sanford Payne and Elizabeth Turley.[1]. He had brothers Richard and Sanford.[2]

Travers married twice. First, he married Mary Ann Wise.

Mary Ann Wise Payne died in May 1844 in Loudoun County, Virginia.

Second he married Eliza J. McKee on October 18, 1848 in Frederick County, Virginia according to Eliza J. Mckee Payne herself in Travis Payne's War of 1812 Pension File.[3]

He died on 19 Dec 1872 in Hampshire County, West Virginia.[1] He is buried at the Bethel Church Cemetery, Gore, Frederick, Virginia.[1]

"84 . TRAVERS ( s. 23 ) b. in Fx. Co. His niece Mrs. Evans ( 248 ) is my authority for naming him and Richard as brothers of the last named Sanford Payne. Travers served as Private in the War of 1812 in Capt . Alexander Howison' s Co. , 36th Va Inf. , Col. Enoch Renoe commanding. His name is spelled Travis in these muster - rolls. 1842 he bought land in Ld. Co. at Snickersville (now Bluemont), which he sold 1846 . He had a son James who lived in Ld. Co ."[2]
