Ethel Lois Payne was an American journalist, editor, and foreign correspondent. Known as the "First Lady of the Black Press," She was the first black woman to be accredited to the White House press corps in the early 1950s, and reported from 30 countries.[1]
Ethel Payne was born in Chicago, Illinois in 1911.[2]
She attended Chicago public schools and furthered her education at the Crane Junior College, Chicago Training School (later the Garrett-Evangelical Theological Seminary), and Northwestern University.[3]
She was a writer for Chicago's black newspaper, The Chicago Defender, and was eventually promoted to Associate Editor and continued in her role as a reporter. Ethel Payne moved to Washington to when the newspaper established a one-person bureau there. She was their correspondent until 1973. She then reported for CBS News until 1982.
According to her biography posted at Garrett-Evangelical Theological Seminary's page, Ethel "reported on many of the historic events occurring in the nation, such as the Montgomery Bus Boycott. She was instrumental in the success of the 1963 March on Washington." [3]
She died in her home in Washington, DC, in 1991.[2][4]
In 2002, the US Postal Service issued a stamp in her honor[5].
