Josiah was born in 1662 to John and "Patiance" ( ) Payne. [1]
See Leicestershire Parish Registers: Marriages, vol. 1, p. 97: "Josiah Pain, of St. Martin's, Leicester, & Sarah Whitnell, 8 May 1687" These represent the only occurrence of the Pain and Whitnell surnames in the register. [2]>

Transactions of the Leicestershire Architectural Society, vol 7., p. 96 May ye 11th 1708: Recd then of James Harris and Jno. Tyler being the presant Churchwardens of the Parrish of St. Maryes Leicester Twenty Shillings it being for the mending ye Great Bell Clapper of ye said Parrish and by the Receit of which I do own my Selfe fully Satisfied for ye mending of ye said Clapper and I do farther own and Bind my Self by this Obligation for ye term of my Naturall life allways when Ever there Shall be Ocatoin or defect in ye Said Bell Clapper to mend and make it good at my Own Caust & Charges in Witniss where of I have here unto Set my hand.
