Note: Worthington, IN newspaper THE GAZETTE dated February 7, 1866 headline The I.V. Railroad, Meeting at Gosport--- $5,000.00 Donated regarding a meeting of January 25. Jessie I. Alexander was chosen president, J. S. Meek secretary, with a motion by Judge Franklin for a committee to solicit funds for the railroad in Owen county. The members of that committee were H. Wampler, John Ittenbach, Maj Woodsmall, Paris Williams, Wm. A. Montgomery, E.W. Arganbright, and J. S. Meek. " On motion of Maj. Martin, a Committee was appointed to wait on Gen Burnside, to ascertain whether a union could be effected between his Railroad Company and the Indianapolis, & Vincennes Company, between Martinsville and Spencer so as to use the same grade."

Continued article: Meeting at Spencer "At the Railroad Meeting held on Saturday night, Judge Franklin was called to the chair, and in a brief address stated that the object of the meeting to be to consult as to raising the means to complete the road; and he administered a sharp and deserved rebuke to those who oppose the road, or to aid in its construction. A committee was appointed to "raise subscriptions and rouse the people to attend the meeting of next Saturday. The Chair appointed J. F. Payne, S. Joslin, J. M. Coleman, W.E. Dittemore, Dr. M. G. Mullinix.

John F. Payne served as treasurer of the Hudson Hill Cem.association from at least 1883 until 1899 when he offered his resignation. During the course of those years his signature and writing seemed to degrade abruptly between 1896 and 1897, based upon a reading of records of the minutes of the association.

A recent review of divorce records in Owen County, Indiana suggests that John was not married twice, but three times. There is always a possibility that yet another man named John F. Payne could have existed, but it is unlikely. Owen Co. Marriage records list a John F. Payne marriage to Sarah M. Hester 4-23-1861 Note: Owen Co., divorce listing shows a John F. Payne and Sarah M. Payne divorce & alimony granted Sept 24, 1862 listed in Book 3 p 534,
