Joseph was born in 1829. He is the son of Henry Payne and Dinah Spencer.

Christened june 28,1829 East Grinstead, Sussex

1841 Census Joseph S (aged 12 years) was living at Rocks Grinstead East with his parents Henry (45-49) Dinah (50-54) and siblings Richard (14) and Charles (9)

1851 Census Joseph (aged 21 years) was living at East Grinstead, Sussex with his parents Henry (55) Dinah (Diana) (58) and siblings Jane (27) and Charles (19) with neice Eva (only months old). Listed there also were Jane Buckland (17) (Servant) born East Grinstead and John Longhurst (17) (Apprentice) born Oxted, Surrey.

Joseph was buried on April 17, 1880 in St Swithens Churchyard, East Grinstead, Sussex
