Biography

John Jackson Payne was born in 1816 in Grayson County, Virginia, later known as Carroll County. He was known throughout his life by his middle name Jackson, which is used in most of his records.
On 14 October 1839 Jackson Payne and Eliza Hanks were united in marriage in Surry County, North Carolina. Barnet Payne was the bondsman. [1]
The following children were born of the marriage between Jackson and Eliza:
Roseman Payne ~ 1840
Amanda Payne ~ 1842
Nancy Payne ~ 1845
On 28 August 1848 Jackson Payne and Margaret Hawks were united in marriage in Surry County, North Carolina. [2]
The following children were born of the marriage between Jackson and Margaret:
Calvin ~ 1850
Lucy ~ 1853
Sarah/Sally ~ 1854
Martha ~ 1861
Malinda ~ 1865
Eldridge ~ 1867
John Jackson Payne had lived his entire life in the Pipers Gap area of Carroll County, Virginia. He survived two wives with whom he had fathered a total of seven children. He had been a farmer all his life. In the 1900 Census Jackson is living in the home of his thirty year old son Eldridge, along with Eldredge's wife Zilpha, age 24. Eldridge and Zilpha have two children, 3 year old Leila M. Payne, and 1 year old Media M. Payne. Jackson is 84 years old.
Note: There is more than one Jackson Payne who was a Confederate soldier, and at least one soldier from Carroll County, Virginia who applied for a pension. So far, however, I have not found absolute proof that our Jackson Payne was one of them.
