Biography

JOHN PAINE was the son of John Paine 2nd and Phillippa Strange.[1]

JOHN PAINE was born at Freetown on 3 October 1743 (his parents' "second son & fifth child"),[2] and died after August 1820 (date of the census) and before 14 April 1823 (his wife's death). His marriage intentions were published at Freetown on 2 December 1763 to BARBARA RICE, a daughter of Major Henry Rice of Warwick Rhode Island and his 1st wife Martha. [3] Barbara died in Freetown on 14 April 1823 in her 83rd year.[4] No Warwick marriage record has been found.

This is the John who served on various local militia expeditions during the Revolution. [5] Service details at DAR Genealogy Service.[6]

John farmed a part of original family property - the 19th Lot of the original 1660s division bought by his great-grandfather Ralph Paine. John’s grandfather, also named John, left him a quarter of his homestead farm in Freetown and made him executor of his will, dated 5 February 1763 when John was 19 years old, and proved 6 May 1766 when John was 22. (Older kinsman Ralph Pain was instructed to make sure that headstones were erected if young John failed to do so.) [7]

In the 1790 census, John’s household consisted of three Free, White Males 16 years and over (father John and sons John and Ebenezer), and four Free, White Females (mother Barbara and daughters Avis, Abigail and Elizabeth). Daughter Martha had married the year before.[8]

In the 1800 census, John’s household consisted of “0 – 0 – 0 – 0 – 1 // 1 – 0 – 0 – 1 – 1 – 0”. The under-five female may have been one of Martha’s children, while the older females were either Avis or Elizabeth and certainly mother Barbara. The male was John.[9]

In the 1810 census, John’s household consisted of “0 – 0 – 0 – 1 – 1 // 0 – 0 – 0 – 1 – 1”. The younger male was likely eldest son John who never married, while the younger female was likely Elizabeth.[10]

In the 1820 census, the household was just John and Barbara: “0-0-0-0-0-1 // 0-0-0-0-1-0”.[11]

There is no will nor probate for either John or Barbara.
