Johnson Paynter was born in Newlyn East, Cornwall, England.

Johnson Paynter was born in 1766 at Newlyn East, Cornwall, England and was baptized on 4 Jul 1766.[1] He was the son of William Paynter and Elizabeth Glanfield and resided before 1787 in St. Winnow, Cornwall. Marriage bans were published on three Sundays, the 8th, 15th, and 22nd of April 1787, and he was married to Catherine Hender on 29 April 1787 at St. Issey Chapel in Cornwall.[2] She was the daughter of John Hender and Mary Bassett. Johnson Paynter was a wool-stapler (a dealer in wool). He held lands at Burlawn near Wadebridge. About 1808, Johnson moved his family from St Issey to St Eval, where they lived at the farm known as Little Trevisker.Johnson and Catharine were the parents of 10 children:

In about 1808, Johnson and Catherine moved to St. Eval to live at the farm known as Little Trevisker.[22]

That must not have been far from where they lived previously, because six of their eight children at that time had been baptized at St. Eval. In 1841, Catherine's sons Samuel and John were living with her and Johnson in St. Eval.[23]. Later that year, Johnson passed away, on 18 Oct 1841 in St. Eval[24] and was buried on 21 Oct 1841 in St. Eval cemetery.[25][26] According to Johnson's will, he left the following sums to his surviving children: Betsy = £1, James = £50, William = £50, Sam = £50, Thomas = £100, Francis = £100, John = £100, Kitty = £70, Eliza = £70.
