Biography

Betsy Paynter, daughter of Johnson Paynter and Katherine Hender, was born at Boskenna Castel, St. Buryan, Cornwall, England, in May of 1790. She was christened on 19 May 1790 at Egloshayle, Cornwall.[1] About the year 1808, she moved with her parents to Little Trevisker, a farm in the parish of St. Eval, Cornwall, England. Here she met and married James Rundell who lived on an adjoining farm known as Great Trevisker.

From the St. Eval Parish records for 1811:[2]

Banns of marriage between James & Betsy were published without impediment on Sundays April 7, 14 & 21. The said James Rundell of this Parish and Betsy Paynter also of this Parish were Married in this Church by Banns this fourth Day of May in the Year One Thousand Eight Hundred & eleven by me Thos. T. The young couple went to live in an adjoining village called Penrose, where they worked for James Rundell's parents, Richard Rundell and Elizabeth Leverton. Later they moved to to a farm called Trescullion (now called (Roscullion) just inside the Parish of Little Petherick. They leased this farm from 1813 to 1854.

It was at this house that Betsy & James had fourteen children:

Ann, bap. 15 Dec 1829[14]

Johnson Paynter, bap. 9 Nov 1834[16]

The father passed away in 1839;[17] son James in 1842;[18] and daughter Sarah, also in 1842.[19] Census Records from 1851 show that Betsey Rundell was the head of the family (aged 60), and was farming 60 acres at Trescullion.[20] Her children listed as living at home were: Catharine aged 31, Hercules aged 30, Johnson aged 16, and Mary aged 1. They also had a boy servant by the name of Richard Osborne, aged only 11.

As the children grew to maturity, eleven migrated to America. While none of them engaged in mining, they settled in the lead mining district of Platteville, Wisconsin. They were: Eliza Rundell (Mrs. Stephen Carhart), in 1842; William, Thomas, and Samuel Rundell, 1848; Richard and Ann Rundell (Mrs. Richard Biddick), in 1850; Catherine Rundell (later Mrs. Peter Biddick), in 1851; and Betsy Paynter Rundell with Hercules Paynter, Betsy (Mrs. George Paul), Mary Jane (later Mrs. James Nichols), and Johnson Paynter Rundell, in 1853. That last trip with Betsy left Padstow on 1 Sep 1853 aboard the Belle and arrived in Quebec, Canada on 18 Oct, proceeding from there to Platteville, Wisconsin, where her daughter Eliza had originally settled with her husband Stephen Carhart, and where her other children had joined them. They left behind the eldest son, John, who remained on the old home farm.[21]

Betsy lived at Mitchell Hollow near Platteville in a cottage (East House) near her daughter Elizabeth (who was then married to George Paul). Then she and her son Johnson bought part of what is now the Dale Rundell farm north of Rewey, Wisconsin.[22] They bought this farm on 19 May, 1858. In 1860, Betsy was with her daughter Mary Jane Nichols.[23] Later, she moved back to Mitchell Hollow to be near her daughter, Betsy Paul.[24] There she passed away on 27 September, 1877, at the age of eighty-seven. She is buried at the Greenwood Cemetery, Platteville, Wisconsin, Grant County, Lot 9, Block B.[25]

Among the things she brought to this country were twelve china cups with deep saucers. She gave one of these to each of her children.[22] When she was 17 years old, she was given a gold ring, which she passed on to her oldest daughter Eliza, who in turn gave it to her youngest child George William Carhart. It is known as the "mourning ring" and is still in the Carhart family.

She also brought a pitcher of old English pottery, which she gave to her youngest child, Johnson, who in turn gave it to his oldest grandchild, Marcia Rundell Grindell. It was one of her most prized possessions.[22] The following lines were inscribed on the old pitcher:

Let the wealthy and the great,
Roll in splendor and state,
O envy them not, I declare it.
I eat my own lamb,
My own chickens and ham,
I shear my own fleece and i wear it.
I have lawns, I have bowers,
I have fruits, I have flowers,
The lark is my morning alarmer.
So jolly boys now, Here's God speed the plough,
Long life and success to the farmer.
