Biography

Samuel Noyes Peabody, born 21 Jan 1820, was the tenth and final child of Lucy (Breed; 1776-1842) & Samuel Noyes Peabody (1774-1852).

He married first, Jane Maria Burnham (b. Jan 1814, E. Hartford, CT; d. July 1856, Stonington, IL). The marriage occurred 20 Dec 1848 in Christian County, Illinois [1],[2], but was published also in Hartford, Connecticut [3]. It was also published at a later date in New Haven and Hartford [4],[5]. These publications and announcements in Connecticut stemmed from the status of Stonington, Illinois, as a "satellite" community that was named and settled by pioneers coming from the area around Stonington, Connecticut [6].

Per the 1850 census record of Samuel N. Peabody Sr., the father of this profiled Samuel N. Peabody, both were residing in Christian County, Illinois [7]. Jane, the wife of Samuel Jr., also appears in this 1850 census record.

Jane Maria (Burnham), the first wife of this Samuel N. Peabody died in July 1856, in Stonington Illinois, and was buried there [8]. Subsequently, Samuel married second, probably in October 1857, Maria Ann Parkhurst, who was born 28 May 1833 in Plainfield, Connecticut. Corroborating this account, the 1860 census of the household of Samuel Peabody (age 40, thus fitting the subject of this profile), lists no wife named Jane, but does list Mariah, age 27, as Domestic [9]. The 1870 census likewise does support the second marriage of Samuel N. Peabody with Maria, and indicates the existence of one daughter:

  • Jennie Peabody, b. about 1859

Samuel N. Peabody was a farmer, as was his father.

Samuel N. Peabody died 29 Jan 1907 in Illinois. His grave is in Old Stonington Cemetery, Stonington, Christian County, Illinois, USA [10].

Notes

The 1850 census lists the following children who were born in Illinois, yet their stated ages vs. the date of Samuel N. Peabody to his first wife would not lead to presumption that they were the children of the first marriage of Samuel Noyes Peabody:

  • Dudley R Peabody, b. about 1842
  • James A Peabody, b. about 1844

The following individual also appears in the household per the 1850 census. Relationship of this person to this family is undefined:

  • Chalotte Evens, age 10; born in Indiana
