She was taken to the Redi-Med clinic Sunday afternoon.Family members said she jumped when a staff member attempted to give her a penicillin shot, causing a 4-inch long, inch-deep gash in her buttocks.James Bingham, chief executive officer of St. Tammany Parish Hospital, which owns the clinic, said the doctor on duty ordered a local medication to numb the area so the cut could be stitched.Shortly after the second medication was administered, the child lapsed into a coma from which she did not recover, Bingham said. The girl died Monday after life-support systems were removed at Children's Hospital in New Orleans.Bingham said the case is under investigation by his office and the coroner's office. The file indicates that the girl's father was informed of the penicillin before it was administered, he said. The father gave the clinic a patient history that did not indicate an allergic reaction to penicillin or any heart problems, Bingham said.'This is a tragic situation. Our sincere sympathies go out to the family,' Bingham said. 'We are very concerned and, as with all patient deaths, we will conduct a full investigation.'A funeral service was scheduled for today in Covington.
