BET. 1798 - 1803 Thomas Peacock was a soldier during Napoleonic Wars on the 1799, 1800, 1803 christening records of their sons Samuel and Edward and daughter Maria Ann. He had recently enlisted as two years earlier in 1796 at daughter Sarah's christening his occupation was listed as "laborer". Again in Feb 1805 Thomas's occupation is given as laborer at the christening of daughter Mary Ann.
Notes: Thomas Peacock was probably a volunteer soldier doing home guard duties as were one and a half million other men by 1804. In 1805 the enlistment bounty was raised from 7 pounds 6d to 12 guineas. Volunteers received pocket money while in training and uniforms were free to volunteers. A private's uniform in a fashionable London volunteer corps would cost 50 pounds per annum. Recruitment parties were held with music from the military bands present - at this time the music would have been a great entertainment of the laboring man! The first census was taken to determine the numbers of men available, and each county had to provide details of the number of able bodied men between 15-60 years of age, details of what service if any each man was prepared to offer the state, details of what weapons he possessed, details of the amount of life-stock, carts, mills, boats, barges and grain available, details of the number of elderly people, how many alien and infirm. This was compiled by constables or schoolteachers and checked by clergymen and deputy lieutenants, these returns were repeated in 1803. For a list of extant returns see IFW Beckett (Ed.) The Buckinghamshire Posse Comitatus 1798, Aylesbury 1985 pp363-6. No exhaustive list exists because the research necessary has never been done.
