The life of Sir Arthur Pearson: Bt., G.B.E., newspaper proprietor and founder of St. Dunstan's hostel for sailors and soldiers blinded in the great war, 1914-1918

Obituary:[1]

The death is announced of Sir Arthur Pearson, president of the National Institute for the Blind, and founder of Arthur Pearson, Limited.
When taking a bath he slipped. His head struck the taps and he was drowned while unconscious. At an inquest a verdict of accidental death was returned. Medial evidence showed that death was due to drowning after concussion caused through slipping and striking his head on the bath taps.
The best monument to the great, purposeful work of the late Sir Arthur Pearson for it revealed in him, when faced with the apparently overwhelming odds of blindness, a fine nobility of nature that touched deeply the hearts of all Britons, is, and always will be, St. Dunstan's. That wonderful institution, which has recreated, so to speak, thousands of men afflicted with blindness in the war, and of which he was the founder and director, will always carry with it, in the splendor of its magnificent work, the indelible impress of the influence and the devoted labours of Sir Arthur Pearson.
In his blindness, the affliction came upon him in 1914 after the gradual loss of sight, his sympathy went out wholeheartedly to those who, in the war and on the altar of patriotism, shared his own misfortune. He devoted his life to them, bringing to them a new vision, in his own triumph over blindness.
The late Sir Arthur Pearson, Bart. GBBE was 55 years of age, and was the only son of the late REv. A. Cyril Pearson. He was educated at Winchester. IN the business world his name will always be associated with the great publishing business of C. Arthur Pearson, Ltd., of which he was chairman and until the failure of his sight he was the active proprietor of various newspapers. His book "Victory Over blindness," revealed that sublime spirit of courage in affliction which permeated St. Dunstan's as a great ray of light. His extraordinary energy and business capacity won for him, at the age of 42 years, the responsibilities of managing director of "The Times" newspaper, which was then shortly to be formed into a limited liability company.
He was created a baronet in 1916, and, in 1917, as a tribute to his great national work, a Knight of the Grand Cross of the Order of the British Empire. His public-spiritedness brought him into close association with quite a number of organisations. He was president of the National Institute for the Blind, chairman of the Blinded Sailors and Soldiers' Care Committee, associated with which was his work for St. Dunstan's; president of the Fresh Air Fund, vice-president of the Tariff Reform League, and vice-president of the Tariff Commission, 1904, and among other activities, honorary secretary of the collecting committee of the National Relief Fund, 1914.
