Biography

Lella was my paternal grandmother. Her biography is based upon personal information, documentation, and family members recollection.

Lella Marion Peck was born on February 22, 1892 in Springfield, Pleasant Township, Clark, Ohio. She was the 3rd child born to John Peck and Edith Clarissa Thacker. She had two older brothers, Frank Melvin, born January 23, 1885; and Donald Ewing, born June 14, 1887; one younger brother, Raymond Olinger, born March 27, 1896; and a half -sister from her father's previous marriage, Helen, born May 29, 1869. Lella's birth certificate records her given name as Sela E. Peck but many of the documents spell her name as Lella.

Lella's family settled in London, Madison, Ohio where her father John farmed the land that he purchased.

On September 15, 1861, John enlisted in the United States Civil War. He was a private in Company C, 40th Regiment, Ohio Voluntary Infantry. Records state it as the War of the Rebellion. While John was in the war he contracted rheumatism which afterwards resulted in heart disease. John was honorably discharged on October 7, 1864 in Columbus, Franklin, Ohio after having served 3 years and 12 days in the service. On June 1, 1900, John passed away in London, Madison, Ohio from heart failure.

Edith appointed Noah Thomas of London, Madison, Ohio to be her attorney and she filed for her father's war pension. The Declaration for Widow's Pension was received by the U.S. Pension Office and was date stamped on June 15, 1900. It stated that Edith's annual income did not exceed $2,512.

On July 8, 1898 Edith made application to enter her four children in the Soldiers & Sailors Orphan Home in Xenia, Ohio. Her husband was handicapped and Ill from heart disease and it was difficult for her to care for him and the children. The application was accepted and the 1900 census shows that her four children were students and living in the orphanage. Lella was 8 years old at the time.

While my father was alive, he and I spoke often about our family history and he told me that his grandmother did this not only because she had a difficult time caring for them but also could not afford to support them since John was unable to work the farm and bring in an income. It is my belief that eat it knew her husband did not have long to live and my father told me that during this era it was improper for a single woman to have children, even if the mother were widowed.

On November 27th, 1912, Lela married William Jared Tudor in Covington, Kentucky. Between 1914 and 1926, they had seven children: Henry, Helen, William, Frieda, Georgette, Mary, and Margaret.

In 1930 the family lived at 63 State Route 20 in Henrietta, Ohio. William was a laborer working in telephone construction.

In 1940 William and Lela and two of their daughters lived in the home they purchased at 134 Wheeling Street in Wellington, Ohio. This is the home they would live in for many years to come. My father purchased property directly across the street from my grandparents home and built the house that I grew up in. Our home was set back from the street approximately (?) feet. Although I was very young I have memories of my grandparents.

My grandparents home was close to the street with a nice sized back yard which they planted beautiful flowers every where. I can remember the wonderful floral aroma from their garden filling the air when I would step into the back yard. I can vividly recall the grill that grandpa constructed out of bricks and large stones where he would cook hot dogs during the summer months.

Lella was born in 1892. Lella Peck ... She passed away in 1962.[1] Burial - Greenwood Cemetery Wellington, Lorain County, Ohio, USA
