The actual christening date is, in the double dating system, 7 January 1761/2. This system was adopted to allow for the difference in the years in the Julian and Gregorian calendars. Under the "old" Julian calendar which was used in Great Britain until 1752, the new year began on the first day of spring (or the 25th of March). This caused it to be different years on the continent and in Britain. The Gregorian calendar was adopted in most Catholic countries beginning in 1582.
