Biography

"Nichols, Charles H., Essex, is a farmer born in Richmond Vt. on January 5, 1820. He was a son of Charles H. and Rachel (Peck) Nichols. His paternal grandfather was James Nichols, a pioneer of Richmond, Vt. Charles H. Nichols, Sr, was a farmer by occupation and lived in Richmond, Vt., the greater part of his life and died in Bolton, Vt. He had a family of ten children – Maria, Minerva, James, Charles H., Polly, William S., Lidy M., Alexander, Sarah A., and Adoniram J.

Lucy Nichols, the mother of Charles Herma Chipman, was born in Richmond, Vt. July. 24, 1821, a daughter of Charles H. Nichols, a native of Harden. Ct., and of English descent He died when Mrs Chipman was ten years of age. Her mother, nee Rachel Peck, was born in Clarendon, Vt. of English descent. Thomas and Lucy Chipman were married in Vermont, and were the parents of two children – Charles H, the subject of this sketch, and Laura M, wife of Wilford Jodoin, of Vergennes, Vt. [2]
