During the Revolutionary War the Pedens were in Spartanburg County, SC; at the end of the War , they moved to Fairview, Greenville County, SC. Fairview Presbyterian Church was organized during the fall of 1786 by the families of John Peden, Samuel Peden, David Peden, James Alexander, and James Nesbit and it was received 10 Apr 1787 under the care of the South Carolina Presbytery. In 1787, three other families, James Alexander, Sr., William Peden, John Alexander and David Morton (a son of Jane Peden), came from Nazareth and united with Fairview Church.
Tradition says the parents of John PEDEN (1709 - 1791-2) were James or Thomas PEDEN, his moth er Mary MILLS. John PEDEN's wife, Margaret "Peggy" MCDILL is said to have been the daughter o f John MCDILL( 1675 - 1761 ) and Janet LESLIE.
The South Carolina colonial government offered bounties and land grants in the 1760s and 1770 s in order to settle the South Carolina back country.
Thomas PEDEN,age 24, son of John and Peggy McDill PEDEN along with his sister Jane Peden MORTON, age 26, her husband, John MORTON, age 39, and their children David MORTON, age 7, John MOR TON , age 4, and Elizabeth MORTON, age 2, arrived in Charles Towne ( Charleston ), South Carolina in late 1767 - early January of 1768. They sailed from Larne, Ireland aboard the snow ( small sailing ship ) the James and Mary.
Five years later, October 18, 1772, John and Peggy McDill PEDEN and the rest of their famil y along with Peggy's brother Thomas MCDILL and his family arrived in Charles Towne, South Car olina. They also sailed from Larne, Ireland aboard the snow the James and Mary.
These families all settled in the Greenville - Spartanburg - Chester area of South Carolina.
In the pension record of Samuel, the letter from Daniel Peyton (Daniel Peyton, Fayette Cour t House, 6 Jan 1836) was in there. He speaks of John Peden, father of Samuel born in Ireland , and his seven sons are listed: John, James, Thomas, William, Samuel, Alexander and David.Hi s Daughters listed Jane married to Morton, Elizabeth married to Gaston, Mary married to Alexa nder. He stated in there the only Peden's he knew were offspring of his father John Peden.
-Elizabeth Ann Baker was never married to John Peden II. His wife is identified in his probat e records as Ginny. I believe Ginny was a daughter of William Archer of Chester Co., SC. Eliz abeth Ann Baker was apparently the second wife of Samuel Peden and they probably married in G eorgia where Samuel and his children had moved after selling the land in 1815 he inherited fr om his father in SC.
-There are church records of Samuel Peden's family at Fairview Presbyterian Church in Lawrenc eville, GA.
-I believe all 7 sons of John Peden I and Margaret McDill served in the SC Militia during the War for American Independance. Militia records are somewhat spotty and I have been able to find records for 5 of the sons. I have not found anything for eldest brothers James and John.

John was born before 1750. John Peden ... He passed away after 1813.[1] BURIAL Moffatt-Strong-McDill Cemetery Chester, Chester County, South Carolina, USA

Research Notes

According to Eleanor Hewell in 1900 Pedens of America pg 178: "his father was named James, or Thomas, there is some dispute as to which. His mother, acocurding to one testimony, was Mary Mills, and his grandparents were James Peden and Agnes Miller. This James Peden was the younger brother of 'The Prophet Peden'. In this family three sons, Alexander, James, and Mingo. Their mother was Isabella Robb and the father was Hugh Peden, who suffered martydom; the grandfather being Alexander Peden, husband of one of the daughters of the House of Hamilton.... These statements are give as they reached the writer, but it is a 'far cry" back to 1524, so there may be mistakes." Eleanor cautioned against these statements.

These records probably came from the Presbyterian Church records in Sorn, Ayrshire, Scotland. These records show a James Peden and Agnes Miller had children there between between 1693 and 1712. Our John Peden was born in Ireland between 1702-1709. Their oldest child isn't old enough to be a parent of John Peden.

Furthermore Isabell Robb is shown as being married to a James Peden, and birthing her babies in Sorn Parish between 1721 abd 1733. Not only do the dates not align, but the Y-DNA shows the Peden of Broughshane are not descended from the Pedens of Sorn. Reference: Pedens of South Carolina, page 10.

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with John by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with John:

the Ships passenger list for the 1767 crossing of the James and Mary, included Thomas Peden, Jane's brother. http://sciway3.net/proctor/ships/v2/jandmary1767.html John and Peggy also sailed on the James and Mary but at a later date. The new book, Pedens of South Carolina is well researched and sourced, and corrects the errors of Eleanor's book.

John and Peggy were on the voyage of 25 Aug 1772, with Thomas McDill and his family.
