Biography

Marie (Pedersdatter) Fremmerlid migrated from Norway to Canada.

Marie Kristine Pedersdatter Håskjold was born on 2 February 1898 at Jøsok farm in Herøy, Norway, the daughter of Peder Johannes Sørensen and Ingeborg Pauline Nikoline Eliasdatter.^[1]

By the 1900 census, her family moved to the nearby town of Volda, her parents' hometown.^[2] In 1903 her father purchased property at Håskjold farm in Volda.

In the 1910 census, Marie was 12 years old and lived with her family in Volda.^[3] In the census her father was noted as residing in "Britisk Columbia Amerika". Her father Peder worked in British Columbia, Canada for a period of 7 years (1907-1914) to help pay off the farm. The farm became successful, but Marie's mother Ingeborg struggled with raising 7 children and managing the farm while her husband was away. They had a 8th child in 1914.

At the age of 19, Marie married Tore Jakobsen Fremmerlid, son of Jakob Toresen, on 29 June 1917 in Volda.^[4] They had 5 children together:

2. Aslaug Fremmerlid (1919–2018)
3. Peter John Fremmerlid (1920–2004)
4. John Kennth Fremmerlid (1930–1996)
5. Thomas William Fremmerlid (1933–1979)

In the 1920 census, Marie was living with her husband Thor in Roald, Vigra (an island north of Ålesund) with three of their children.^[5]

In 1927, Thor emigrated from Norway to Canada. Marie and their three children followed in 1929.^[6] The family then settled in Saskatchewan, where their fourth child was born.

In the 1931 census Marie Jacobson (age 33) was the wife of Thore Jacobson at 201 Maple Street in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan.^[7] They were listed with their children Ida, Aslaug, Peter, and John.

By 1933 they moved to Burnaby, British Columbia where their youngest child was born. They lived in the Central Park area of Burnaby for several years.

Marie passed away at the Vancouver General Hospital on 2 September 1944 at the age of 46.^[8][9]
