Hello Chris,

The Profile Improvement Project (PIP) is performing another check-in with project members. Please review the following and let us know if you plan to be active in the Project.

The Project operates in a team structure. There are currently three participant PIP Teams -- The Maintenance Category Team, the Unknowns Team, and the Biography Team. There is also the Voyage Team which guides new Voyagers. See the Profile Improvement Project Teams for a brief outline of each team.

You're currently identified as a member of the Biography Team. The Biography Team works on profiles from their watchlist and other profiles that interest them. Are you happy with the Team you are on?

If you have not already done so, we invite you to join the email GoogleGroup and text chat Discord channel for our project. (You will need your Wiki ID for both). Neither is required; we also use the Profile_Improvement tag in G2G for Project announcements.

The Profile Improvement Project is working hard to meet its goals. We would like to hear about the successes you’ve had and would also appreciate any feedback you have to help improve the Project. Please share your thoughts in a reply to this comment or via private message to one of us.

Sincerely,

Debi Hoag and Kay Knight, Co-Leaders, Profile Improvement Project

Hello Chris,

We wrote to you about the check-in for Profile Improvement Project (PIP) a couple of weeks ago. Would you like to continue in Biography Team Level 1 where we have placed you? That's the Team that works on improving profiles from both your own watchlist and projects you are involved with to Level 1 of the PIP Profile Standards.

We would like to hear from you with any ideas or suggestions. If you do not wish to participate in the Project, please let us know. If we don’t hear from you within 7 days we will remove you from the Project, but we will welcome you back at any time.

Sincerely,

Dear Chris,

The Profile Improvement Project (PIP) is performing its first annual check-in with our project members. Please review the following and let us know if you are content where we have placed you or would like to be more involved.

We are in the process of transitioning to a team structure. There will be three participant PIP Teams to start -- The Maintenance Category Team, the Unknowns Team, and the Biography Team. There is also the Voyage Team which guides new Voyagers. See the Profile Improvement Project Teams for a brief outline of each team. You're currently identified as a member of the Biography Team Level 1, working on profiles from your own watchlist and whatever else you find. Biography Teams Levels 2 and 3 will work on designated profiles for notables (Level 3) and everyday people (Level 2). Please let us know if you would like to help with another Team.

We would also like to invite you to join the email GoogleGroup and text chat Discord channel for our project. (When you request to join our GoogleGroup, please be sure to include your Wiki ID). Neither is required; we also use the Profile_Improvement tag in G2G for Project announcements. You will find more information on the GoogleGroup.

We thank you for all you do to help the Profile Improvement Project and WikiTree. The Project’s mission is to:

Make profiles beautiful! We clean up messy biography sections and sources, and try to set standards for attractive, useful, and well-written biographies, starting with those we manage.

We know you’re working on profiles *smile* We would like to hear about successes you’ve had toward the Project’s goals. We would also appreciate any feedback you might have to help us improve the Project. Please share your thoughts in a reply to this comment or privately via private message to either of us.

Sincerely,

Chris, I awarded the Acadian badge. I would like to also say thank you for getting connected to your Acadian lines without making duplicates! That is much appreciated! I also love your recognition of the need for sources. We have a great list of sources for Acadians here:

https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Space:Acadians_Project_Reliable_Sources https://www.wikitree.com/index.php?title=Space:Census_links_and_citations&public=1 Now that you are on the project, please take a moment to review the project page https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Project:Acadians and especially look at the areas we need help with. We have many options to work on to contribute to the overall Acadian community. Feel free to ask or discuss if you'd like a little more information. Cindy Cooper, co-leader, Acadian project.

Hi Chris,

Thanks for taking the Pre-1700 Quiz!

Pre-1700 ancestors can be shared by many descendants, so collaboration is essential. You can learn more about joining the community in How To #3 and in the Project FAQ.

The Acadians Project may fit your research focus. If not, use the Pre-1700 Projects list to find other possibilities. Review the project page to learn about resources and guidelines as well as how to collaborate with the project members.

Have questions? Ask in the comments section of my profile.

Remember to cite reliable sources in pre-1700 profiles you manage, or edit. (See: Pre-1700 Reliable Sources).

PS Have you noticed that you can click on Tags to see others interested in that surname, or location?

I am still getting used to wiki tree and do have several questions. The first one has to do with DNA. I have a few family members who I have entered profiles for in the tree who have tested. What is the simplest way to be able to enter that information? Do they haveTo become members? If so do they have to upgrade from guest membership? And how do I tie that to their existing profile rather than creating a new profile when they join?
posted by Chris Pederson
Hi Chris,

Azure is off duty, so I am answering. They do have to become Family Members as that establishes that they have given permission for their information to be included at WikiTree.

You can send them an invitation by editing their profile and adding an email address, then saving. An invitation email with a link to join will be sent to them.

If they accidentally create a profile rather than accepting the invitation, their new profile and the one you created would need to be merged together. To do that, edit the profile you created and remove the email address. Copy the Wiki ID of the profile you created, then go to their profile. Scroll to the bottom and find the initiate merge link. When the page comes up, the new profile Wiki ID will be in the first box. Put the Wiki ID of the profile you created in the second box and click Merge. They will get a notice asking to merge the profiles. If there are any problems getting that to work, let Azure or myself know and we can have the Team complete the merge.

If they are not interested in genealogy, they can set you as the profile manager. At that point, you will be able to take care of adding their DNA information. You can read more about that in this FAQ: https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Help:GDPR_FAQ#What_if_my_relative_isn.27t_interested_in_genealogy.3F

I hope this helps.

Hi Chris,

You are now a Family Member and this will allow you to maintain and add profiles. Creating your family tree in Wikitree provides you the opportunity to connect and collaborate with other members.

Since WikiTree is different from other genealogy sites, we have a guided tour for new members at New Member How-To. Feel free to work through the How-Tos at your own pace.

If you have questions about how WikiTree works, let me know. You can use the "reply" link under this comment or click my name, then ask in the comment section of my page.

Great to have you on board, enjoy, and good luck growing your branches.

And ...

Thank you for adding your DNA Test information to your profile on WikiTree. Your information will be propagated to the profiles of your parents and your ancestors within about 24 hours of being added. It will also propagate to the profiles of the descendants of your ancestors, so they may see your information under the heading "DNA Connections" just as you can see theirs.

Getting started with DNA outlines how to proceed to use your DNA test information on WikiTree and DNA is a link to a collection of links about WikiTree's many features involving DNA.

The DNA Connections list on your profile will provide a visual way for you to find potential relatives on WikiTree who have also added their DNA test information. Using DNA tools at sites like GEDMatch.com, if you find a relative that matches your DNA sufficiently and you have genealogical sources for the intermediate relationships, you can mark the specific parental relationships back to the most recent ancestor that you both share as "confirmed with DNA." For details, guidance, and examples of how to properly document DNA confirmations, see DNA confirmation.

To get the best results, begin adding sourced profiles for your ancestors until you can connect to ancestors already in WikiTree. If you have exhausted what you know on one line, it can sometimes help to add what you know on another line. The more branches you are able to add the greater the likelihood of finding potential cousins to match with. The process of identifying which branch elements of DNA relate to will better enable you to find matches that relate to the particular branches you are researching.

Hope this information is useful.
