Note N600In 1850 Selden Peebles returned to NY state and worked for a time on some railroad construction. The next year he returned to his father's farm in IL and worked there until the spring of 1852 when he
started overland for CA with other men and 3 yoke of oxen. They arrived at Hangtown, CA September 17, 1852. Selden cut lumber for awhile and then he started panning for gold on the South Fork of th
e American River. He bought a 1/3 interest in a gold claim for .00. his first pan of gold washed out at 2.00. He worked for about 4 years on this claim and sent enough money home to buy a far

He left CA on a steamer from San Francisco to Panama. he crossed the isthmus to Colon and then came by water to NY, and then by rail to Chebanse, IL. On April 19, 1856 he arrived at his mo
ther's home to find that his father had died in July of 1855.
