Meredith, NH was known as New Salem until it was incorporated as Meredith in 1768; http://www.nh.searchroots.com/documents/History_Meredith_NH.txt. Hence, in 1788 there was no New Salem, NH. But there was a New Salem, Massachusetts.

The 1790 US Census shows her father James in New Salem, Massachusetts with one child under 5 years of age.

Mary Peebles, born to James and Martha Peebles, was born in New Salem, Massachusetts, not New Hampshire.

She is my great x 4 grandmother.

Thank you for the correction. I adopted this record at some point, but do most of my research on Ancestry.com, where I do have it listed as New Salem Massachusetts. My tree is public, so feel free to check it out, if you have access.
