Jehu Peebles was born about 1705/1708 in Prince George County, Colony of Virginia. As is common with other surnames, in various records, even official records, there are often variant spelling of the surname. Some of the variations in spelling include: Pebles, Peblis, Peebles, Peoples, Peoplis, Peeples, etc. The name in family records is spelled as Peebles. Notwithstanding, the given name of Jehu is also spelled in several different variations.[1]

Jehu Peebles is a DAR Patriot Ancestor, A088007.

Jehu Peebles was known as Jehu, Sr during his lifetime. According to the "Peebles Ante" book he was the fifth in line from Captain David Peebles, the progenitor of the family in America: Jehu Peebles, David, William II, William I, Captain David Peebles). His date of birth is given as between 1705-1710. Jehu Peebles was first noted in records in 1740 and there are numerous other records naming him under the surnames of Peebles, Peeples, Peoples, sometimes with different spellings in the same document.[4]

He married Mary Burton and they had several children who are also named in the "Peebles Ante" book. She was the daughter of John Burton of the Colony of Virginia.[5]

Children of Jehu Peebles included Molly Peebles who married Lemuel Lanier, Jehu Peebles who married Catherine "Caty" Smith, Hubbard Peebles who married Amy Robinson, and Britain Peebles who married Jane Jennie Green.[6]

Jehu Peebles, Sr., appears in the tax list, 1782-1793. then is marked "Exempt". He had 250 acres in 1788-9, then is marked "Tax Free". In 1783 he and Hubbard Peebles were among those who signed the release to the sureties for the Parish collections. His son, Hubbard, made a deed in 1788 selling to Sterling Peebles an estimated 230 acres on the south side of Reedy Creek, except 127 acres whereon Jehu Peebles, Senr. at this time lives, and on which he is to have his life unmolested. Jehu Peebles was still active and witnessed marriage bonds, deeds, etc. It seems he remarried after Mary's death. Jehu Peebles and Ann Peebles signed a note to the county clerk requesting a marriage license be granted, "our daughter, Ann Rivers" to Hezekiah Cooksey; the bond was issued the next day. There is at least one document between Jehu Peebles, Sr. and his son Hubbard Peebles where he and Ann both signed with their mark. Jehu Peebles, Sr did not die until after 1803, when for "natural love and affection" he gave his grandson, Dudley Peebles (son of Britain), 2 slaves, 3 sheep, and furniture. Jehu Peebles came close to reaching the 100 mark in age.[4]

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with Jehu by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with Jehu:
