Maria was born about 1850 in Huntingdonshire, England.[1] She was the daughter of William Peel and Eliza (Bennet) Peel. She was six months old at the time of the 1851 census - living in Somersham, Huntingdonshire with her parents, brother and two sisters.
The length of time resident in New Zealand as recorded on her death certificate indicates that she emigrated around 1869.
She married (1st) Thomas Hatton in 1871.[2] Maria's sister Susannah was one of the witnesses. Maria and Thomas had at least seven children: Marion (1872), Herbert (1874), Thomas (1876), Sarah (1877), John (1880), Edward (1881), Percival (1883).
After Thomas' death in 1887 [3][4] Maria married (2nd) John Lees Stewart in 1888.[5] He passed away the following year at the age of 33.[6][7] No record found of there being a child from this marriage.
She married (3rd) John Edward Neame in 1893[8]
She passed away in 1934 age 82 [9] and is buried in Omaka Cemetery.[10]
