Biography

He was the huntsman after whom the well known nineteenth century song "Do ye ken John Peel" was written. [1] "Ken" means "know" in many dialects in England.

John was probably born in 1776 but baptised on 24 September 1777 in Caldbeck, Cumberland, England.[2]

According to an unsourced report on Ancestry he married Mary White in 1797 at Gretna Green, Scotland.

John's death was registered in the Oct-Nov-Dec quarter of 1854 in the Wigton district,[19] and was buried on 25 October 1854 in Stanwix, Cumberland, England.[20]
