Biography

Maud was born in about 1852, her birth being registered in the 1st quarter of that year[1]. She was the daughter of Major Lawrence Peel and Catherine De Winton.

She was baptised on 4 January 1852 at Llanstephan, Radnorshire, Wales[2].

Her father died in 1865.

In the UK Census of 1871 she was recorded in the household of her 75 year old grandfather William Henry Peel at Aylesmore House, St Briavels, Chepstow, Gloucestershire, England. She was aged 19. Also in the household was her widowed mother Katherine, her four siblings, and five servants.

28 year old Maud was recorded in the household of her widowed mother Katherine (aged 59) at 6, Queens Gate Terrace, Kensington, London & Middlesex, England in the UK Census records of 1881. Also in the household was her brother Walter Hayward Peel (33), sister Agnes Mary Peel (26) and six household staff.

Sadly her brother William De Winton Peel died on 4 May 1884 in Darjeeling, India. He was 33 years of age.

On 4 April 1885 her sister Agnes married John Stewart Scot Barker in Kensington, Middlesex.

By the time of the England and Wales Census of 1891 Maud was living with her widowed mother Catherine (aged 69), her brother Walter Hayward Peel (43 and a Barrister) and four household domestic staff at Clarence Parade, Portsea, Portsea Island, Hampshire, England. She was aged 38 and single.

At the age of 38 and a spinster, Maud married Dr. Arthur Edward Cecil Spence on 16 September 1891 at the parish church in the parish of St. Mary de Lode, Gloucestershire, England, after Banns[3]. The witness were Agnes Mary Barber, G. A. Prendergast, Walter H. Peel, and Catherine Maria Peel.

Peel-544 and Peel-1549 appear to represent the same person because: Duplicate profile. Unfortunately the "suggested match" didn't come up when I created her profile for whatever reason. Kind regards, Linda Prole
