At the time of his marriage to Louisa Cook in 1867, he was a resident of Beeston, Nottinghamshire.

Louisa died in 1867. On the 1871 census, Joseph is a widower.

In 1872, Joseph was married to 2nd wife, Emma Smith in Basford, Nottinghamshire, England.

By 1881 the couple had 2 children, Thomas (9) and Emma Rebecca (2).
