___

from McCubbin Collection - approx. half dozen men named Peeler in the same area in Orange and Rowan Counties - not all related, evidentally. (late 18 cent.).

________

from Arnold, Jonnie P.: "Some American Peelers and their Descendants" p.9:

"....know that Anthony Peeler 1.1.2 did own by ca1780's approximately 600 acres of land in that area of (then) Rowan Co, just above the Forks of the Yadkin River, and that Peeler Creek did run through this property. All the records we have available to us today indicate that this Anthony was not the immigrant but a grandson, the son of Christian Peeler. 1

pp79,80:

Anthony Peeler and Barbara (_____) were parents of Lizzie.

"Anthony Peeler removed from Orange Co NC to Rowan Co about 1775 or shortly thereafter with his uncle, Michael. Michael settled in what is today the Rockwell-Salisbury area and Anthony in the Forks of the Yadkin River area in what is today Davie Co NC. It is possible that both these men took up land which was claimed or belonged to, possibly by grant, Anthony and Christian Peeler who were in the Rowan Co area in 1758-1759. This speculation is based on a Granville Grant recorded in Rowan Co NC deed Bk 4, p. 144, date 22 Feb 1759, in which the Earl of Granville deeds to Charles Hunter land in the Parish of St Luke 'Begin at Black Oak, between Dutchmans Creek on Moses Elworths (line? creek?) on Peelers line, then E 65 chains along Peelers line to a white oak, N 70 chains to a Red Oak, West 65 chains to a pine, thence to the beginning.' This grant was for 480 acres. IN Book 4, page 142, same records, is recorded another Granville Grant to Charles Hunter containing 520 acres which is located on 'Creek No Creek'.

"These grants are in the same general area where Anthony Peeler is shown with a large tract of land about 1780. I found no deed of this land into Anthony Peeler but it is shown at the Davie County Land grant map made by Andrew Lagle in 1976 and is confirmed by looking at the deeds of adjoining land ownersÑBenjamin Bentley; Rudolph Neats; Alex Cearns and John Johnson. In Rowan Co Deed Book 10, page 238 dated 1784, State grant no 1038, to Daniel Lewis, the description contains...on Peelers Creek...corner on Anthony Peelers line... other deed references to Anthony Peeler's land in this area are in Deed Bk 10.........

"On 12 Dec 1786, a grant was entered in the name of David Woodson...NC...Sold entry ...150 acres...to Anthony Peeler on 25 Jun 1792. When surveyed it contained only 75 acres....[description-on Yadkin with fish trap called Bald Mountain Fish Trap].

"Anthony Peeler bought and sold a number of parcels of land in this area throughout the years. In at least two of the sales he was joined by his wife Barbara...[refs to deed books].

"On 1 Feb 1810, in Deed Book 20, page 304, Anthony Peeler deeds to his son, Jacob Peeler, 290 acres which he bought from Woodson. On 20 Dec 1814, Anthony Peeler deeds to David Woodson 602 acres on the east bank of Yadkin River next to Deley Williams and the old corner of Parks, down both Lick Creek and the River. The deed was witnessed by Jacob Peeler and Nathan Wolles and proven by Wolles in Aug 1818. (Same records, book 20, p. 304).

"In checking the purchases and sales of all the land in which Anthony Peeler was a party, in so far as I can tell, this last tract of land was for all the land owned by him. Certainly he was an old man, perhaps ill and getting his affairs in order. It is known that he had a son Jesse in TN and that son Jacob also went to TN soon after. Did Anthony die about 1814, or perhaps go to TN with his sons.

"Anthony Peeler is shown on the 1790 census of Rowan Co, NC with 1 M O16; 4 M U/16; and 4 F. In 1800 census of Rowan Co he is shown with 1 M O/45; 1 M 26/45; 1 M 16/26; 3 M U/10; 1 F O/45, and 2 F U10. I did not find him on the 1810 census. These records indicate he had a large family, only three of which we have definite records for.".

Then children Elizabeth, Jacob, Jesse and a probable Squire and Mary. Maybe married a second time, because Squire is mentioned herein as a half brother of Jesse. p. 80. [See source for info on Squire not included here.].

Various other records of Anthonys in Ms Arnold's other book - "A Collection of Peeler Records". Anthony appeared in NC court records 1777-1794. Don't know if same one. Also deeds. and estate stuff. and tax lists. and census records. Check these if want more details than in above narrative. Seems very thorough.

__________

from the Records of the Moravians in North Carolina, vol VII, p 1770 (Menlo Park LDS. 975.6/F2m):

1781, Aug 3: Ă’A man named Anton Bihler came with a wagon from Pennsylvania, and brought us a small package of letters.
