Thomas moved to Grundy County, Missouri in 1839 with his parents and sibling and cousins from four other families. In the 1860 census, Thomas is listed as living in a hotel run by John and Nancy Peery (relatives) that housed two teachers, eight students, and Thomas. Thomas is listed in the census as a merchant with $125 in real estate and $4500 in personal property. He married one of the teachers from the hotel on September 20, 1860 and moved by Prairie Schooner to CA in 1864.
