Biography

The 1869 "Pease History" identifies Nicholas Pees and his family as it was provided to the authors: Nicholas Pees emigrated from Germany in 1773, and settled in Washington County near Cannonsburgh. A brother named George came with him but we have no information concerning his history. Our informant states that this ancestor always spelled his name Pees. The informant, Lydia A. Pees, was a great-granddaughter of Nicholas.

The 1910 "History of Washington County" tells us this: Nicholas Pees came to North Strabane Township, from east of the Allegheny Mountains about 1763 and he build the old mill at Wyland Station which was known as Pees mill and attracted custom from a distance of twenty miles or more.

The Pennsylvania archives document that Nicholas served during the Revolutionary War. (Revolutionary war enlistment) Penna. Archives 6th series, Vol.II, p. 106, Private 6th class Capt. Geo. Sharpe's Co., 3d Battalion, Washington County Militia. May 18, 1782, p. 93, 3d Battalion, Washington Co. Militia, Capt. Geo. Sharpe's Co.

The will of Nicholas Pees is documented in the 1931 "Pees - A brief History of the descendants of Nicholas and Hannah Pees". The will was dated 1818, which documents that Nicholas was alive in that year and lists his wife Hannah and his children.

  • 6. John W. Anthony, M.A. 1931, Pes - A Brief History of the Descendants of Nicholas and Hannah Pees, The faith that motivated the life and history of the pioneer and subject of this brochure could not be better expressed than he has expressed it in his Last Will and Testament, which follows:

In the name of God, Amen. I, Nicholas Pees, of Strabane Township, Washington County, and Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, being weak in body but of sound mind and memory, blessed be God for same, do make this last will and testament, in way and manner following: First, I give my soul to God that gave it to me, and my body to be buried in a Christian -like and decent manner at the direction of my executors, not doubting, but at the general resurrection I shall receive the same again by the mighty power of God. And as to such worldly estate, as it hath pleased God to bless me with in this life, I give and dispose of the same in the following manner and form: First, I ordain that all my lawful debts and funeral charges be paid out of my personal estate by my executors, and I give unto my well-beloved wife Hanna the sum of sixty dollars for year during her natural life. Forty dollars of it is to be paid to her by my son, Andrew Pees, and twenty of it to be paid to her by my son, George Pees, each year. I give and bequeath unto my beloved son, Andrew Pees, and to his heirs and assigns forever a part of my plantation on which he now dwells, on which the mill stands. The residue of my plantation that remains after that I bequeath to my son, George Pees. Which to make it more plain and intelligible I give and bequeath unto my son, George Pees, that part of my plantation on which he now dwells, beginning at a corner between me and James Thom, and thence running along the line of the plantation that was James Scott's line, as when turning off and running about a north course through the improvement until it extends out of the improvement about three perches and thence running north.....west between my son, Andrew Pees, and my son, George Pees', field until keeping out.........field about four perches until it strikes James Herron, along said James Herron line along the great road until it strikes McWhirter's corner, nigh Herron's Smith shop, line to the place of beginning, taking in, by about, the thence running along McWhirter's line and James Thom aforesaid course as will contain one hundred and eighty-seven acres with usual allowance for roads. Which I give and bequeath unto my son, George Pees, his heirs, and assigns forever. And when that is surveyed off to my son, George Pees, then all the remainder of my lands I give and bequeath to my son Andrew Pees, together with all the mills and improvements therewith belonging to him and his heirs and assigns forever. But I will that that part of the land and himself is is subject to pay unto my daughter, Mary McGlumphy, two hundred dollars, and one hundred dollars unto my daughter, Susanna Hutchison, and two hundred dollars to my daughter, Catherine Carson, and two hundred dollars to my daughter Hanna Kerr. To be paid to them by my son, Andrew, after my decease, but by him producing sufficient receipts of any part of it being paid, he is to be clear of all that he hath paid already. And I will that my son, George Pees, and the land I have willed and bequeathed to him be subject to two hundred dollars that I will to my daughter, Margaret Carson, and one hundred dollars that I will to my daughter, Susanna Hutchison, after my decease, but him producing sufficient receipts of any part of it being paid before, he is to be clear of all that is paid before. Likewise I appoint James Kerr and James Roney, my trusty friends, executors of this, my last will and testament, and I hereby revoke and renounce all former wills and testaments by me made, and I declare and pronounce this and no other to be my last Will and Testament. In witness whereof, I, Nicholas Pees, have hereunto set my hand and seal this thirteenth day of January, in the year of Our Lord, one thousand eight hundred and eighteen. Signed, sealed and pronounced by the said Nicholas Pees as his last Will and Testament in the presence of us and in presence of one and other.

Joseph Vaughan William Herron Moses McWhirter N. B. - Before signing I will that my son, George Pees, pay to my daughter, Betsy Lisk, the sum of two hundred dollars, and when he produceth sufficient receipts of payment being made to her he is to be clear of her. NICHOLAS PEES (Seal)
