Biography

Notables Project
Benjamin Peirce is Notable.

Benjamin Peirce was born at Salem, Massachusetts, in 1778, a son of Jerathmeel Peirce; he married Lydia Ropes Nichols in 1803. He died at Salem in the summer of 1831.

He was a "merchant in Salem for many years in connection with his father, but being of strong literary tastes, accepted in 1826 the the more congenial situation of Librarian of Harvard University, of which he wrote a history; he md. his cousin Lydia R. Nichols..." (Materials Ropes Family)

Research Notes

The Salem records (VRs, Vol. 2) show that Benjamin, b. 1778, was the third son born to Jerathmael who was given that name. It must be presumed that the others, b. Dec., 1772, and Dec., 1776, died at birth or in their infancy.

Peirce-703 and Peirce-221 appear to represent the same person because: Benjamin & Lydia were my multiply-great uncle & aunt. Peirce-221 was orphaned and I adopted it, adding sources and notes; this is a clear duplicate to Peirce- 703. Please approve the merge.
