Biography

Paul Sparrow Peirce was the son of Andrew and Rebecca (McKibbin) Peirce. Paul was named for his father's brother, Paul S. Peirce, and great-grandfather, Paul Peirce.

He was born at the family farm, near Newville, Pennsylvania. According to the Peirce Family Bible: "Paul S. Peirce was Born May 31st 1824 about 11 o'clock A.M."

On April 5, 1833, Andrew Peirce, yeoman, and his wife, Rebecca, sold their 158-acre farm in West Pennsboro Township, Cumberland County, to Daniel Donner for the consideration of $5,400. The family then moved to Pittsburgh, including their children: Joseph, Jeremiah, Paul, Jane Mary, Andrew, John and William Hayes.

After only a year in their new home, in late 1834 and early 1835, four of the Peirce children came down with the measles. In spite of their mother's faithful care, two of the children, including Paul and John, did not make it.

Paul died at the age of ten on January 11, 1835 a few days after his brother John had died.
