Biography

Herbert Pell III has French origins.

Herbert Claiborne Pell III was the son of US Senator Claiborne Pell and Nuala Pell of Newport, Rhode Island. He and his family lived in Tucson, Arizona, where he first worked as a Vice-President of the Valley National Bank and then owned or was involved in four different automotive businesses.

Early on Bertie, as he was known to his friends, was interested in art and art history. He would graduate from Princeton University with a B.F.A. in Art History.

Herbert met his future wife while studying art in school. He would marry Eugenia Stillman Diehl on September3, 1969. Together they would have two children, a daughter, Christina O’Donnell Pell and a son, Herbert Claiborne Pell IV.

Herbert would follow in his father’s footsteps and serve in the U.S. Coast Guard. He would be involved in Search and Rescue while stationed off Cape Hatteras, North Carolina, and in Juneau, Alaska.

Upon leaving the Coast Guard, Pell would settle down in 1973 by moving to Tucson.

Herbert Claiborne Pell III would pass away in 1999 after a long battle with cancer.
