Ties to California Political Families

Ties among the California Democratic Party political families of Brown, Newsom, and Pelosi and the billionaire Getty family date back three generations.

Willam A. Newsom (1902-1977) ran the Pat Brown campaign for San Francisco district attorney, who then later became governor of California.

His son, Justice William Newsom, who died in December 2018, had been an attorney for oil magnate J. Paul Getty, most famously delivering $3 million to Italian kidnappers of Getty’s grandson, John Paul Getty III, in 1973.

Gov. Pat Brown’s administration developed Squaw Valley for the 1960s winter Olympics and afterward awarded a concession to operate it to William Newsom, Sr. and his partner, John Pelosi.

In 1963 John's son, Paul Pelosi (born 1940), had married Nancy, daughter of Congressman and Baltimore Mayor Thomas D'Alesandro Jr., In 1969, Paul and Nancy moved to San Francisco, where Paul Pelosi's brother, Ronald Pelosi, was a member of the City and County of San Francisco's Board of Supervisors.

Ronald Pelosi, born 1934, made his fortune in the securities industry. Ron was married to William A. Newsom's daughter, Belinda Barbara Newsom (1935-2008) from 1956–1977. The couple had known each other since they had met in San Francisco grammar school. [1]

Brother Paul Pelosi made his own fortune in real estate and venture capital. The Pelosi family wealth catapulted Nancy into campaign success in San Francisco politics, and ultimately Speaker of the United States House of Representatives. As of 2007, Nancy Pelosi stood as the ninth-richest person in the 435-member House. [2]

While serving on the appellate bench in the 1980s, Justice Newsom helped Getty’s son, Gordon, secure a change in state trust law that allowed him to claim his share of a multi-heir trust.

After Newsom retired from the bench in 1995, he became administrator of Gordon Getty’s own trust, telling one interviewer, “I make my living working for Gordon Getty.” The trust provided seed money for the PlumpJack chain of restaurants and wine shops that Justice Newson’s son, Gavin, and Gordon Getty’s son, Billy, developed, the first being in a Squaw Valley hotel.

Gavin Newsom, who became Mayor of San Francisco, then Lieutenant Governor, and then Governor of California in 2019, had been informally adopted by the Gettys after his parents divorced, returning a similar favor that the Newsom family had done for a young Gordon Getty many years earlier.

Newsom’s PlumpJack business (named for an opera that Gordon Getty wrote) led to a career in San Francisco and California politics, and now to the governorship, succeeding his father’s old friend, Jerry Brown.[3]
