James was born in 1849. He was the son of Isaac Penberthy and Catherine Salter.

He was united in marriage 01 December 1875 at Dodgeville, Iowa County, Wisconsin to Maggie Crook daughter of Peter Crook.^[1]

He passed away in 1882.
