"Our Pence family of Gilmer County are descended from Charles Pence/Bentz that received an English Crown grant in Georgia 2-8-1774. He received 100 acres in the Province of Georgia in the Parish of St. Paul which is Richmond County today. He was deceased by 15 August 1789 when Frederick Kimbel applied for letter of administration on the estate of Charles Pence.

In January 1793, his son, Abraham Pence of South Carolina came to Richmond County and applied for letters of administration and received them and sold the 100 acres that Charles had receive in 1774 and went back to South Carolina."
