Here, I primarily discuss my WikiTree activity, with a brief summary of my life. Those who I have provided access to my private, intimately detailed bio can read that here.

Brief biography

I was Born in 1988 in Halifax, West Yorkshire. I was officially registered Damien Craig Sykes [1] but then reregistered with the surname Pendleton. [2] I have a congenital condition called Optic Nerve Hypoplasia, rendering me totally blind and possibly contributing to my ADHD and high-functioning autism (borderline aspergers). Despite these, I live a relatively independent life.

I attended a mainstream school from 1992 to 1999 before transferring to a specialist school for the remainder of my education.

I moved to Pontefract in 2013, where I married my wife. Unfortunately the relationship ended in divorce in 2017, and I moved back to Halifax.

I have been playing keyboard instruments since 1992, and enjoy many styles of music. My other hobbies include computer programming and software development (since 2002), gaming (since 2003), genealogy (since 2005), radio broadcasting (since 2010) and change ringing (since 2016). My change ringing performances can be viewed here or here..

I have owned a range of musical instruments, including a guitar, an accordion, an autoharp, a recorder, a harmonica, a cheap set of handchimes, a drum set, two electronic drum machines, fifteen keyboards (not including toy ones), an electric organ, and an upright piano.

Apologies for the delay, I have recently had a change of email address and I haven't logged into WikiTree for a while, so have only just noticed these. Yes I am more than happy to stay on the project, though I am not as active as I used to be. Hope that's still OK. Email address has now been changed so I can respond to emails as normal. Cheers.

Hello Day,

The Profile Improvement Project (PIP) is performing another check-in with project members.

As you know, the Project operates in a team structure. There are currently three participant PIP Teams -- The Maintenance Category Team, the Unknowns Team, and three Biography Teams (one self-directed and two directed). There is also the Voyage Team which guides new Voyagers. See the Profile Improvement Project Teams for a brief outline of each team.

You're currently identified as a member of the directed Biography Teams for Abandoned and Popular profiles. Are you happy with the Teams you are on? If you are interested in working with a different Team, please let us know.

We thank you for all you do to help the Profile Improvement Project meet its goals. We would like to hear about the successes you’ve had and would also appreciate any feedback you have to help improve the Project. Please share your thoughts in a reply to this comment or via private message to one of us.

•If you would like to continue as a project member •If you are happy with your current teams or would you like to join a different team •How much time per month (on average) you spend working on Scottish profiles •Anything you’d like the Scotland Project to do more of in the future

You can respond to this message by posting a reply below or sending me a private message on WikiTree. Hi Day,

It is once again time for our annual Ireland Project check-in. Please respond within the next three weeks to let us know:

  1. If you would like to continue as an Ireland Project member. If your answer is yes, please tell us if you are happy with your current team, or if you would prefer to join a different one. If you are currently participating in more than one team we would appreciate you ranking them in their order of importance to you, from highest priority to lowest. This information will be helpful as we consider possible future changes to our team structure.
  2. In the past, the project has had a very minimal membership requirement (one contribution per year) for badged members to meet. Do you believe this is adequate, or should this requirement be increased? What do you believe would be a reasonable commitment to expect from all project members?
  3. How active have you been in the Ireland Project over the past year? Please choose one of the following options: a) I normally spend 1-5 hours per month helping achieve my team’s goals. b) I normally spend 6-10 hours per month helping achieve my team’s goals. c) I spend over 10 hours per month helping achieve my team’s goals. d) I am not able to contribute every month but have spent approximately ________ hours during the past year improving Irish profiles.
  4. Please provide feedback on any things you’d like to see the project do more of in the future.

You can respond to this message by posting a reply below or sending me a private message on WikiTree. Great to see you so active already. How is the hunt for primary sources going?

Hey Michel,

A combination of help documents and WikiTree greeters have me on the straight and narrow, though I must admit there's a lot to take in, and even then I think some of the help pages could be improved or expanded upon. Primary sources are, and always will be an issue for me, as a result of those ornaments on my face that I call eyes. Of course I can rely on transcriptions, but those aren't exactly primary and can actually be a hindrance. One mistranscription and my family tree goes completely out the window, as I found out to my cost about a year ago when I had to delete about 15 years of work. That's why I'm glad I found WikiTree - I no longer have to work alone. Collaboration is awesome. Someone else also recommended the roots search feature to me. My biggest problem with that is most of it links to either US repositories which don't apply to me, or paid resources which I don't feel comfortable using as sources. I believe information should be available to everyone and so people should be able to view the sources for free as well as the information they attempt to verify. I do have a few useful free resources that I can access, but again, I have to rely on transcriptions. Hopefully that's where collaboration comes in - if someone can look at profiles I create and/or manage and verify the sources, they can hopefully look at the original scans and modify the sources to point to those instead. Thanks for your encouragement. I've seen a lot of community spirit here, and that fills me with a lot of confidence. I've already had a great time on here so far and I'm sure I'll continue to do so. All the best, Damien.

Hey Damien,

I fully agree, sources should be open data and free to use. My own country has great resources for that fortunately, but not all areas as as lucky. We all work with transcriptions I think. The quality really will depend on the area/age, but in general are well accepted.

Taking a brief look at your own ancestor list, then I can assume that England has your interest?

The England project has some help pages on free online primary (but transcribed) sources. They are on the Reliable sources page. The England project also has a training, free and online, to collaborate on English project. They are a friendly group of people and most find it worth while to follow the Orphan Trail.

I also agree that the help pages could be improved in locations. We are all volunteers and trying to do our best. If you have specific input, that would be really helpful. Many help pages have evolved over time and may contain old information that needs updating. Keeping information up to date is always rather time consuming.

Keep up the good work!

Michel

Hey Michel,

I would love to help improve the help pages, but there doesn't seem to be an edit facility on those. I have made some minor edits to those help pages that show up as profiles (I must admit that gave me a giggle). Yes, all my close family are English, but further back it seems I have Scottish and Irish ancestry as well. If anything is hard to find, it's those. I didn't realise everyone used transcriptions - that is helpful to know. But it does still need verifying - all it takes is for a transcription to say "James" where the original says "John" and you'll be searching for a "James" and likely tracing an incorrect line from there. I'm still trying to get my head around projects - I have only recently grasped the concept of sources. I am also just getting my head around G2G - the help pages on WT are very vague about that, presumably because there's already a help page on G2G...that I have only just found! Haha. Anyways, I still have goodness knows how many sources to find for profiles, so I'm sure I'll be here for a good while and will learn a lot in the process. Again, thanks a lot for your help and encouragement.

Hey Damien,

No, help pages are not for public editing, as they are official. You can post comments on most of them. If you want to propose changes of have other questions, the G2G forum is a great place to go. The link to it is in the menu under help (maybe a bit strange place, but it is what it is).

Yours, Michel

Hi Damien,

Thanks for taking the Pre-1700 Quiz!

Because pre-1700 ancestors are shared by many descendants, working with members of the projects which coordinate them is essential. You can learn more about joining the community in How To #3 and in the Project FAQ.

Use the Pre-1700 Projects list to find one which best fits your research focus. Review the project pages for special guidelines and to learn how to collaborate with the project members.

Let me know if you have trouble finding projects which fit your focus. Click my name, then ask in the comment section of my page.

Remember to cite reliable sources in pre-1700 profiles that you manage, or edit. (See: Pre-1700 Reliable Sources).

Hi Damien and thank you for upgrading, 😊

I am very pleased to welcome you to the WikiTree family, your contributions will go a long way to joining the world together.

It is best to start with the New Member How-To pages, they will save you a lot of time and frustration.

You mentioned you have sight problems, if you contact our Accessibility Angels Project they will be able to help you.

I am here to answer any question you have, no matter how trivial you may think it is. There is no such thing as a silly question. Please add as much information as you can, it all helps to turn a “name” back into a person. I hope you enjoy the site as much as I do.

Happy tree climbing

Sorry I'm so slow to reply - still getting used to things around here...So much to take in.

Excellent to hear that WT has an accessibility project! That can come in very handy. Thank you very much for notifying me of its existence. The most difficult aspect so far is citing sources - I've never quite understood how that works, but as the help files say, it is important. I have a fifteen-year-old family tree with barely any references in, so now as I manually import information I'm struggling to find out where it came from! Of course a lot of it is transcriptions - hired genealogists reports which unfortunately most of which I lost in a crash, transcriptions of records and of course other family trees, either sent to me or retrieved online, some don't even exist any more. WT is thus forcing me to examine my information, and I love it. Just wish I knew how to utilise it more, because as you can probably see in my tree all my sources are muddled up and probably don't even make sense at the moment. Anyways, off to look at Accessibility Angels, add more profiles and try and get my head around the vast mountain of information in the docs. And again, huge thanks for your help.

Hi Damien,

I know, there is so much here that it'll keep you busy for years! I still learn something new everyday.

Here's a great page to tell you more about sources. The easiest way to add sources would be to list them at the bottom in a bullet list.

Did you know that we have a research tool that makes finding reliable sources easier? I use it all the time and it helps me remember different places to check. To give it a try, go to the Family Tree & Tools tab; select Genealogy Research, scroll down near the bottom of that list, and select Research with RootsSearch (use your WikiTree email & password). There are over 20 websites to access from there. You can read more about the tool in the RootSearch FAQ. You can also find the RootsSearch Tool on your ancestors profile, at the very bottom of the right hand column under the heading "Research".

Anytime you have questions don't be shy to let me know and I'll get back to you as soon as I can, although we are in different time zones so sometimes I might appear a little slow in my responses.

Have a super day, and chat soon!

Kindest regards, Pam
