Sarah Penfield was born on 10 February 1771 in Fairfield, Fairfield County, Connecticut, British Colonial America. She was the oldest daughter of Sgt. John Penfield and his wife Eunice Ogden. She was one of 10 children from this family.
She died on 27 February 1852 in Vermont, United States and was buried in the Evergreen Cemetery, Pittsford, Rutland, Vermont, United States. [1]
Sarah Penfield was married to her 1st husband Philo Stewart, (son of Alexander Stewart and Sarah Bogue) on 12 September 1791 in New Fairfield, Fairfield, Connecticut, United States. He was co-founder of Oberlin College where many Penfields have attended.
After Philo's death in 1812, Sarah was married to her 2nd husband Col. Thomas Hammond the son of Daniel Hammond and his wife Lucy Jones, on 9 September 1815.
She was again widowed but died five years after Thomas's death.
