The local paper gave an interesting account of their "golden wedding," celebrated with appropriate religious exercises, where were present six of his brothers and sisters, seven children, twenty- five grandchildren, and one great-grandchild. During the whole fifty years no brother or sister had died, and but one child and five grandchildren. The clergyman, adverting to the remarkable fact that all the brothers and sisters of the couple were still alive and vigorous, said "That although these happy events were of the Lord's special mercy, yet there were in the lives of these individuals certain means to be recognized by which the Providence of God had brought about such results. These were the diligence, regularity of habit, and temperance of life, for which they had always been distinguished,— freedom from the use of any intoxicating beverage, and, with one or two exceptions, of tobacco."
Ten years later they celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary, when seven of their eight children were living, 24 gr. children, and seven gr.- grandchildren. The same paper says: " The venerable couple are yet hale and hearty, and almost any pleasant Sabbath may be seen walking, arm-in-arm, to the Episcopal church, which is quite a distance from their residence. . . . Their habits of life have been uniform for a long series of years. Temperate and frugal in all things, they have, by observing the laws of health, not only lengthened out their days beyond the period allotted to man, but have the promise of years of enjoyment yet in store for them. There are few family gatherings where all the relatives have been so signally blest with health and worldly prosperity,—the happy results of industry, morality, temperance, and virtue."
