Robert Penland, a son of Elder Robert Penland, of Burke County, and Elizabeth Brank, was born August 15, 1779, and married Mary B. Moore. He left Burke County in the latter part of the eighteenth century and settled in what is now Fines Creek township of Haywood County where he built a home now known as the Ed Ferguson farm. He reared a family of children as follows: William married Polly Penland, a cousin, and lived on Turkey Creek; Robert Henry married Sarah Caroline Sitton and lived near the present site of Canton; James settled near Waynesville; George who married Emily Shook and lived at Clyde; Charles died in young manhood; Betsy, who married James Russell and lived on Fines Creek; Peggy, who married John Rogers and moved to Cherokee County; Caroline, who married James Russell, husband of the deceased Betsy; Avaline, who married first Marjoram Henry and lived on Jonathan Creek, and second Joseph Fincher; Polly Ann, who married Irvin Rice, slain during the Civil War by Federal renegades.
