Biography

John Pennel was born between 1776 and 1784 In Virginia. He was the son of Pierce Butler Pennel and his wife Elizabeth. He married Amelia "Milley" Hunter on 22 Aug 1803 in Henry county, Virginia. He passed away between 22 Aug 1828 and 6 Oct 1828.

Lincoln county, Kentucky (1805)

John Pennel appears in the 1805 tax list for Lincoln county, Kentucky. He is chargeable for 1 white male over 21 (which would be himself, and meaning that he had to have been born by 1784) and two horses.[1] In 1806, in addition to his charges the previous year, he also has 200 acres of third rate land on Casey Creek which had been entered in the name of Wm Henry.[2]

Casey county, Kentucky (1808)

The western portion of Lincoln county, Kentucky, broke off in 1806 and formed Casey county. The first tax list to appear (at least at FamilySearch) after this boundary change was in 1808.

In 1808, John Pennel appears on the tax list for Casey county, Kentucky. He is taxed on one white over 21 (himself) and two horses.[3] By 1809 he has three horses.[4] The 1810 tax list is difficult to interpret, because of some entries being squeezed in between the lines. However, it seems to read the same as the previous year; namely, one white over 21 and three horses.[5] The following year, 1811, he has more than doubled his number of horses. He has eight.[6] In 1812, he has gone down to six horses.[7] The following year, 1813, he still has six horses, but now there is information about the militia. It is recorded that he (as well as his father and his brother Pearce Jr) live in Capt. Weatherford's territory.[8] In 1814, the militia unit is not again mentioned. John is still maintaining his six horses, and his property is valued at $200.[9] By 1815, he has lost or sold half his horses, leaving three, and his total value has dropped to $130. His entry is quite difficult to see; it is located at the bottom of the page, right beneath his brother Pearce Pennel junr. Most of his name is lost in the shadow at the edge of the page. His surname must be assumed, as only the "P" is visible, but the ascenders on the "J" and "h" in John, as well as the tops of the "o" and "n" can be seen. Despite the difficulty in making out his name, I am quite certain (based on his presence in both the previous and following years' tax lists, as well as his position on the list directly beneath his brother and his father) that this entry is indeed John Pennell.[10] In 1816, the number of his horses is difficult to make out; it is either 3 or 5.[11] Given the number of horses the previous year, it is most likely 3. In 1817, as well, his total number of horses is 3.[12] The Casey county tax book for 1818 cannot be found.

1810 census

In the 1810 census, the makeup of John Pennel's household is:

  • 1 male between the ages of 26-44. This would be John himself, giving him a birth date between 1766-1784.
  • 1 male between the ages of 0-10.
  • 1 female between the ages of 26-44. This would be his wife Amelia.
  • 1 female between the ages of 16-25.
  • 4 females between the ages of 0-10.[13]
