Robert was a Quaker

Robert Pennell was baptized on 25 October 1640 at the parish of Balderton, Nottinghamshire, England, a son of Robert Pennell, of Balderton, Nottinghamshire, and his wife, Isabel.[1]

Robert married twice.

  • He married in 1665 at Balderton, as his 1st, to Hannah Elizabeth Hyandson.[1] She died about 1670-1.[1] Note: this profile reports specific marriage date 11 FEB 1664/65 at Balderton, Nottinghamshire, England (without evidence).[citation needed]
  • He married, as his 2nd, to Hannah Johnson (b 1640).[1] She died on "12th month, 4th, 1711" (4 Feb 1712).[1]

Note: He may have only had wife. "Hyandson" may have been Americanized to "Johnson" after their arrival from England.

In "1684 on the 3rd day of the 5th month" (3 July 1684), they received a certificate of removal from the Friends of Fulbeck.[1]

This was certainly in preparation for their emigration to Pennsylvania. The other families who who traveled with them were headed by: Thomas Garrett, Hugh Rodnell, Henry Pennell, and Richard Parker. By 1686, they had joined the Middletown meeting at Chester County.[1]

According to Mendenhall, they attended the Chichester Friends Meeting with son-in-law, Benjamin Mendanhall, who married daughter Ann.[2]

Robert was appointed Constable for Middletown in 1687.[1]
