This is the profile for Joan Penney who married Thomas Kent in Gloucester, Massachusetts in 1658.
Parentage; Dated and Place of Birth
Joan was the daughter of Thomas Penney, as stated in the record of her marriage. Her mother was probably Thomas' wife Ann who died in Gloucester on January 26, 1667/8.[1] Ann's maiden name is unknown.
Based on the date of her marriage, Joan was probably born sometime in 1633-1640, with about 1637 being a reasonable midpoint estimate. Since her father probably immigrated to New England about 1651,[2] Joan was very probably born somewhere in England.
Marriage and Children
Joan and Thomas Kent were married in Gloucester by Mr. Samuel Simmons on March 28, 1658.[3][4]
Joan and her husband Thomas had the following children:
Josiah, b. March 31, 1660. (In the original Gloucester vital records, the name Thomas was crossed out and Josiah written above it.)[5][6]
Thomas, b. March 31, 1660 (From a court record; in the original Gloucester vital records, the name Thomas was crossed out and Josiah written above it),[5][6] d. August 14, 1691[7] (Josiah Kent granted administration of the estate of "his brother Thomas Kent" on March 29, 1692)[8]
Mary, b. January 22, 1661/2.[6] (From a court record; not in Gloucester town records. Date conflicts with Sarah.)
Joan's date and place of death are uncertain. Based on the birth of her son John on January 2, 1676/7, she died sometime after that date, most likely in Gloucester.

Is there a way to confirm if this is the Joan Penney accused of witchcraft in 1692? See Jedediah Drolet, "The Geography and Genealogy of Gloucester Witchcraft," 2005; G09&mbio.nummb44 electronic version, Benjamin Ray and The University of Virginia, Salem Witch Trials, subtitled, "Important Persons in the Salem Court Records" (accessed 2014). "The next Gloucesterwoman to be accused was Joan Penney. She was accused on September 13, 1692 by one Zebulon Hill, a former resident of Gloucester who lived in Salem Town in 1692." No further details therein; author writes, "There are many intricacies of this case which have already been described in some detail by Carol Karlsen in The Devil in the Shape of a Woman."
