My oral family history has always insisted we are related to JC Penney, founder of the JC Penney stores. It turns out this ancestor, Frances A. Penney, was his great aunt. She was my 3 x great grandmother.[1]
Short History of the Penney Family:
Rev. John Penny, b. 10 Nov, 1759 in Hanover County, Va.; d. 17 June 1833 in Anderson Co., KY. He married Frances White on 23 Feb. 1785 in Hanover Co., Virginia. (John Penney was a Baptist minister)
William W. Penney, b 12 Aug, 1790 Hanover Co., Virginia
Thomas Penney, b. Abt. 1792, Mercer Co., Kentucky
Polly Penney, b.Abt. 1794 in Kentucky
John F. Penny, b. 8 Jan 1797 in Kentucky
Eli Penney, b. 6 Apr, 1799 (J.C. Penney's g-grandfather) in Kentucky
Elizabeth B. Penney, b. Abt 1801 in Kentucky
Phillip M. Penney. b. Abt 1803 in Kentucky
James S. Penney, b. 18 July 1807 in Kentucky
and
Frances A. Penney, b. Abt. 1825 in Kentucky
NOTE by Chet Snow: After more research, and using common sense, I have changed my ancestor Frances A. Penney's parents to Rev. Eli Penney and his wife, Mary G. (Burris) Penney. The above-cited "history" is wrong because if Fannie White Penney truly were the mother of Frances A. Penney, born on May 8, 1824, she would have been 63 years old at the time - nearly impossible for that time and place. All of Fannie White Penney's other children were born between 1792 and 1807 when she was already 47, quite an advanced age for women to bear children on the US frontier.
