Lionell Pennington is a part of US Black heritage.
Lionell (also Lyonall, Lionel) was born about 1907 in Pennsylvania. He was likely named after his uncle E. Lionell Pennington.
He was the son of Sarah and Charlie Pennington, and the grandson of Civil War veteran William F. Pennington of the 54th Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry, the first regiment in the United States to enlist men of color during that war.
Education
In 1920, he is attending school, probably in or near East Fallowfield, Pennsylvania.
Residences
1920: Family farm in East Fallowfield, Pennsylvania with his widowed grandfather, widowed father and sister Sarah
1910: Valley Township, Pennsylvania with his parents, sister, and his uncle E. Lionell (also Lyonall E.)
Military Service
Following in his grandfather's footsteps, he also served in the United States military, serving as a Private First Class (PFC) in the US Army during World War II.
Death
He passed away in 1982 and is buried at New Evergreen Cemetery in Hayti, Pennsylvania.
Research Notes
I don't currently believe he was in a segregated or Buffalo Soldier regiment, as he and his sister seem to be able to pass white among other white people, but more research needed. Not sure with whom or where he served yet.
